Safe, Monitored Anesthesia for Pets in Belleville

At Belleway Veterinary Hospital, we take every measure to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety during surgical and diagnostic procedures. Whether it’s a simple local anesthetic or full general anesthesia, our experienced team uses carefully selected medications and continuous monitoring to minimize risks and support a smooth recovery. Your pet’s well-being is our top priority — before, during, and after anesthesia.

Types of Anesthesia We Offer

Each pet and procedure is unique, so we offer several types of anesthesia depending on your pet’s needs and the level of sedation required.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is used to numb a specific area of the body while your pet remains awake and calm. This is commonly used for minor procedures like biopsies, small laceration repairs, or skin mass removals, allowing for excellent pain control without the need for sedation.

Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals

For nervous or reactive pets, we may recommend pre-visit medications to help ease anxiety before arriving at the clinic. These oral medications are prescribed ahead of time and allow for a calmer, more positive experience for both you and your pet.

Sedation & Reversal

Sedation is often used when a pet needs to remain calm for a short, non-invasive procedure or to manage anxiety during travel, nail trims, or diagnostic tests. Sedation allows pets to remain relaxed, often drowsy but responsive, and can be reversed with medication once the procedure is complete.

Sedation may also be recommended for pets with noise sensitivities, thunderstorm anxiety, or fear-based aggression during vet visits. Our team carefully evaluates your pet to determine the safest dose and protocol.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is used when complete unconsciousness and full pain control are required, such as during surgery. This process includes:

  • A pre-surgical sedative to reduce anxiety
  • IV injection to induce unconsciousness
  • Intubation with a breathing tube
  • Inhaled gas anesthesia combined with oxygen to maintain sedation

While anesthesia is much safer today than in the past, we take every precaution to reduce risks — including pre-anesthetic exams, bloodwork, and full intraoperative monitoring.

Patient Monitoring: A Top Priority

Although “patient monitoring” is no longer listed as a separate service, it is a critical part of every anesthetic procedure at Belleway. A trained registered veterinary technician monitors:

  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Respiratory rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Oxygen levels and capillary refill time

We continuously chart your pet’s vital signs every 5 minutes — starting from the moment they are anesthetized until they are fully awake. This detailed tracking allows us to catch even subtle changes early and respond quickly to ensure safety throughout the procedure.
